end of year outfits

my favorite outfits of 2017

It’s officially that magical time of year between Christmas and New Year’s that’s full of reflection and hope. I’m thinking a lot about what I want for 2018, but before sharing what I’ve got in store, I thought it would be fun to take a look back on the highlights of 2017. Tomorrow I’ll have my reverse bucket list for the year, but today is all about the outfits of 2017!

I set a style word of the year for 2017 and it’s one of the best things I’ve done in terms of shopping smarter. The word was “lifestyle,” which I thought about before making every single purchase this year. Working from home shifted my closet needs in a major way, but it wasn’t until I set this goal that I got in the right mindset to stop shopping for things I thought were pretty and started shopping for things that fit my day-to-day life.

In shopping for my lifestyle, I was also able to hone in on my personal style in a big way. I shifted my personal style ID (learn how to create one for yourself in the Feel Good, Dress Better workbook!) from Playfully Classic to Fashion Editor Goes to Brunch and it’s made getting dressed and making shopping decisions so much easier.

For this roundup, I chose my 12 favorite outfits of the year. There are a couple of favorites that didn’t make this list (like this one) purely because of redundancy. A couple of things I noticed about these outfits:

  • Yellow was my color of the year (which I called in this post)
  • I can’t say no to a stripes and floral combo
  • I really rejected the idea of skinny jeans in 2017
  • Color is still king in my closet

So what are my style goals for 2018?

Find a balance between special pieces and everyday needs. At the end of 2017, I’d say one of the biggest holes in my closet is still basics. I just don’t own things like a plain black shirt because they aren’t as exciting to buy as a ruffled embroidered sweatshirt. However, I’m learning I need both if I’m going to wear as many floral pants and skirts as I do!

Have a solid collection of nighttime-appropriate pieces. I struggled all year to put together outfits for various night events, whether that be a bachelorette weekend or birthday party or just a slightly more dressed up night on the town. For whatever reason, my daytime closet doesn’t seem to translate to night, but I’m going to figure out what my style is and add a few go-to items I feel great in after the sun’s gone down.

Stop shopping for the blog. Ugh, I hate this, but it’s become evident to me that I’ve fall under the pressure to buy new things to have something to share. I know it’s silly because I have plenty of clothes and lots of remixing posts I could do, but I’ve gotten pretty caught up in the fun of having pretty new things to take photos in and post about. I’m going to try my hardest to break this habit and really shop for me instead of for my blog this coming year.

  • Girl, your style is so much freaking fun.

  • I love your style- the colorful and joyful feel of it while it is still grown up and really pretty.

The idea of style goals is a good one. For me, I think I’m still trying to sort out my style in a new phase of life (I have our workbook; it helps some 🙂 )

I love all your colors and patterns! I think my style goal for 2018 is to not buy anything new, unless I’m replacing something. I have lots of basics, lots of stuff I like wearing, so there’s really no reason to purchase anything brand new! I also need to work on remixing what I already own – definitely have plenty of options, just need to work on wearing it all!

  • I love the first sentence of the post about how this time of year is about reflection and hope. I think that’s a great perspective because I’ve seen a lot of negativity about 2017 and about the prospect of 2018. Also, I love these outfits too! And I’m excited to see your anti-bucket list post. Those are some of my favorite posts that you write, so much so that it inspired to reflect on what my own list would be this year. 🙂 Hope the holidays are going well for you and my thoughts and prayers are you, Dago, and Mama Dago! <3

  • Those yellow flatforms from American Eagle were my summer staple this year. I love those shoes!
