If you follow my monthly budget updates, then you know that I do pretty well on Poshmark! I get asked a lot what my tips are for making money on Poshmark, so I finally put together a list of my best practices for success on the app. If you’ve been thinking about starting a Poshmark closet of your own and making some extra bank on the side, I highly recommend doing it – with the help of these tips!
Tip #1: Take quality photos – and lots of them!
Well-lit and edited photos are going to best show off your item. Take the time to photograph your pieces during the day in good light and on a non-distracting background. There’s nothing I hate more than seeing what might be a cute blouse hung on the back of a bathroom door in the dark – and then that’s the only photo! Take photos of the front, back, and details. Think about what you want to see when shopping online. If you have or can find an image of the garment being worn, that’s a major plus, as many buyers will ask to see it modeled.
Lastly, if you can, set the scene! Flat-lays are popular for a reason, and it’s because they’re visually appealing. Throw in a few related accessories like a hat, scarf, or shoes to show how someone could style it. If you’ve got a beautifully decorated home, hang your garment among a plant or wall hanging, and people are likely to click through simply because they want to see more.
Tip #2: List the item’s measurements
One of my biggest complaints with Poshmark is that so many sellers don’t list the measurements. I make measuring my garments part of the photographing process. Once I hang something to take its photo, I take a quick second with my measuring tape and jot down the length, waist, armpit-to-armpit, etc. This can reduce the amount of time it takes to make the sale because your potential buyer doesn’t have to ask a bunch of questions and wait for you to measure and answer them.
Tip #3: Keep your closet curated
This is my nice way of saying to post only your best stuff. Are you looking for Forever 21 pieces on Poshmark, or Madewell? There are some things that are better suited for Plato’s Closet or Savers than Poshmark. If you paid under $20 for it, it may not be worth listing because buyers are going to try to get like $5 for it. (Note: This isn’t saying not to post Forever 21 or Old Navy or Target pieces, but know what’s going to sell and what’s not.)
Tip #4: Don’t post all at once
Think of your Poshmark closet as a retailer. Nordstrom doesn’t put all of their stock out for the year at once, they release new items each season. Keep what people are shopping for in mind, and don’t post new sweaters in June. 😉 I also recommend trickling your items into your closet over time. Every time you share a new piece, you show up in a nice little feed for your followers (similar to Insta stories), which keeps your closet relevant in their minds.
Tip #5: Don’t be afraid to set your prices high – or to lower them
This tip comes straight from Poshmark queen Priya’s own tips and tricks post that got me started on Posh in the first place. There are suggestions from Poshmark and other users on what percentage of the original price you should set your listing price, but I don’t put too much stock in that. When I list an item on Poshmark, I first check to see how other sellers have priced the same piece. I don’t want to be the highest priced version of the same item, but I want to be competitive while allowing myself room to lower the price. Anyone who “likes” your listing will receive an email notifying them of price drops, which is a great strategy to get someone to pull the trigger! Oh, and don’t forget to counteroffer!
Tip #6: Re-share your items often
I know, who has time for another mode of social media? But just like you want your photo to be at the top of your relevant hashtags, you want your items to show up at the top of the search results. If you list it and leave it, no one is going to find your items or your closet. Share at different times of the day, share in Posh parties, share every day!
Tip #7: Re-post items from related brands
This is my personal best tip. Yes, sharing your own items over and over is super important because it keeps them at the top of the search results. However, if you’re having trouble getting your items seen because you’re lacking the brands buyers are looking for, you can share items from other sellers in those brands. For instance: when I first started selling, I didn’t own any Madewell, but a lot of the pieces I was selling looked like they either could be Madewell or could be from a Madewell girl’s closet. Not only does sharing Madewell pieces bring me attention from the seller I shared from (who is likely to come look at my closet and return the favor), but other users might come look at my closet thinking the item was shared from my own closet and find something else they like.
I know it sounds weird, but it’s been my most effective trick and I’ve made a lot of sales this way! Are you selling Forever 21 pieces that people may not be searching for? Re-post a Free People dress or Kate Spade blouse, depending on the style you’ve got in your own Posh closet.
Tip #8: You don’t have to just share clothing!
